No. towel42 never moves your PDFs against your will. Your files stay in iCloud, Google Drive, or wherever you put them. We just make them findable.
By default: nowhere outside the EU. Classification and embeddings run on Mistral AI (Paris). Metadata storage is on Supabase in Frankfurt. OCR happens on your own device via Apple's Vision framework. If you opt in, we also support Anthropic Claude (US) for users who prefer their stack.
Health records are treated under GDPR Article 9 as a special category. For these, we keep the full text only on your device. The cloud index holds just embeddings and a short summary — enough to find them, never enough to read them remotely.
Nothing breaks. towel42 identifies documents by their content hash (SHA-256), not by filename or location. Move, rename, duplicate, reorganize — the reconciler catches up within minutes and re-links everything. Zero user action needed.
Yes. One click each. Export gives you a JSON dump of everything we store. Delete cascades through every table and removes your account entirely. This is GDPR Articles 17 and 20 — not optional, not gated, not hidden in a menu.
Partially, yes. OCR runs on-device and works offline. New documents queue locally until your connection returns. Queries need the cloud index. A fully offline mode is planned for later releases using on-device LLMs via MLX.
German and English are first-class at launch. OCR handles both cleanly (including mixed-language scans), and the query parser understands both equally well. More languages coming post-launch — Mistral and Apple Vision both support 20+ languages natively.
